Dear [Congressperson's Name],
I am writing to request your support for legislation that mandates the availability of epinephrine auto-injectors in schools across the country. Several states, including Maryland, Nebraska and Virginia, have already enacted laws requiring schools to stock these life-saving devices. However, a federal mandate would ensure that all children, regardless of the state they live in, have access to emergency treatment in the event of a severe allergic reaction.
Epinephrine is an effective treatment for anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction that can occur suddenly and without warning. Food allergies affect millions of children in the United States, with a significant prevalence in underserved and minority communities. Many of these children rely on epinephrine auto-injectors to save their lives in case of exposure to allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk etc.
For many, including families in underserved communities, the cost of epinephrine auto-injectors can be prohibitive, leaving numerous children without access to this vital medication. Furthermore, children with undiagnosed allergies may experience their first anaphylactic reaction at school. In such cases, having an epinephrine auto-injector on hand can mean the difference between life and death.
Mandating that all schools stock epinephrine auto-injectors would create a critical safety net for students, ensuring that every child has access to life-saving medication, regardless of their family's financial situation, background, race, or whether they have been formally diagnosed with an allergy.
I strongly urge you to support legislation that would require schools nationwide to have epinephrine auto-injectors on-hand, building on existing state laws and creating a safer environment for all children, particularly those in underserved communities.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
